AMLab is working towards having driverless ship-to-shore (STS) cranes by providing a machine vision system. Our system can be retrofitted to STS cranes and provides real-time automation functions, such as anti-collision, container positioning, final landing and detection of vessel movement. Our principal technology is the same enabling technology for self-driving cars: 3D LiDAR machine vision. The system analyses the 3D ship profile and maps out how the container is to be moved efficiently. The direct benefit is operational safety, crane rate performance and improved schedule predictability. It is the only machine vision product on the market that accurately compensates for vessel movement and can detect cell guides.
